Surprising Results From Pakistan's Population Census After 19 Years



The new population census results shows 57% increase in population in 19 years. Pakistan's population has increased to a staggering 207.8 million with an increase of 75.4 million people within 19 years, according to provisional summary results of Sixth Population and Housing Census 2017 that Council of Common Interest (CCI) approved Friday.

According to summary results, the country's majority 63.6% (132.189 million people) still lives in rural areas. Compared with the result of the last census there was a 57% increase in the population at an annual rate of 2.4%. Final results will be available next year.


The urban population stood at 75.58 million, which is roughly 36.4% of total population of Pakistan. In the last census the share of urban population was 32.52%.

Population by Gender 

The female population stood at 101.314 million or 48.8% . The male population increased to 106.449 million or 51.2%. Meanwhile there were only 10,418 transgenders.

Population of Different Provinces

  • Punjab is the most populated province of Pakistan with 110.1 million people which is 52.94% of the total population. 
  • Sindh is the second most populated province with 47.886 million people which is 23% of total population
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's  population stood at 30.523 million (14.69%).
  • Balochistan's population stood at 12.344 million (5.94%).
